Quick answer

Paul greets the churches with grace and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. These twin gifts summarize the gospel he is about to defend.

Overview

This characteristic Pauline greeting is more than a courtesy; 'grace' and 'peace' name the very realities at stake in the letter. Both flow jointly from the Father and the Son, placing Jesus Christ alongside God as their source. By opening with grace, Paul foreshadows his central argument that salvation is by grace, not law-keeping.

Christ at the center

Christ became a curse for us to redeem us from the law's curse, that we might receive the Spirit and be sons — justified by faith in him, not by works.

How Galatians 1:3 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
