Overview
Edom's 'perpetual hostility' reaches back to Esau and Jacob and culminated in betrayal when Jerusalem fell (cf. Obad. 10-14; Ps. 137:7). Rather than aiding their kinsmen, the Edomites delivered fleeing Israelites to slaughter 'in the time of their calamity.' God judges not only direct violence but the cruelty of kicking a neighbor when he is down. Such treachery against the covenant people provokes His justice.
