Quick answer

Israel's desire to be like the pagan nations, serving wood and stone, will never come to pass. God will not let His people simply blend into idolatry.

Overview

The exiles were tempted to abandon their distinct calling and assimilate to the surrounding nations' worship of lifeless idols. God flatly declares this will not happen, for He retains His sovereign claim over them. His refusal to release them to idolatry is itself an act of covenant mercy, preserving a people for Himself.
