Quick answer

The first commandment forbids having any other gods before Yahweh. God alone is to be worshiped and supremely loved.

Overview

This command demands exclusive devotion to the one true God, rejecting all rivals. It establishes the foundation of true worship and total allegiance to Him. Jesus summarized the law's first half as loving God with all one's heart (Matt. 22:37), a love perfectly rendered by Christ and worked in us by His Spirit.

Christ at the center

The Passover lamb whose blood turns away death, the exodus through the sea, the manna, the rock, and the tabernacle where God dwells with his people all foreshadow Jesus — our Passover, our redemption, the bread from heaven, and God-with-us in the flesh.
