Quick answer

The people pledged together to do all that Yahweh had spoken. Israel commits to the covenant before knowing how hard obedience will prove.

Overview

The whole nation eagerly vows obedience, and Moses reports their answer to God. Their sincere yet self-confident pledge will soon be broken (ch. 32), exposing humanity's inability to keep God's law in their own strength. This drives us to the new covenant, where God writes His law on the heart (Jer. 31; Heb. 8).

Christ at the center

The Passover lamb whose blood turns away death, the exodus through the sea, the manna, the rock, and the tabernacle where God dwells with his people all foreshadow Jesus — our Passover, our redemption, the bread from heaven, and God-with-us in the flesh.
