Quick answer

Paul's closing exhortation: the Christian life is a battle, and strength for it comes not from ourselves but from the Lord and his mighty power. It matters because we cannot stand against spiritual evil in our own resources.

Overview

Having laid out the church's identity and calling (chs. 1-3) and the conduct that flows from it (chs. 4-6), Paul turns to the spiritual conflict that surrounds the believer's walk. The repeated emphasis is on strength found 'in the Lord,' echoing the union with Christ central to the whole letter. The same power that raised Christ from the dead (1:19-20) is the believer's resource, so the call is to draw continually on his might rather than our own.

Christ at the center

Every spiritual blessing is 'in Christ,' the head over all things for the church, in whom Jew and Gentile are made one new man by his blood.

How Ephesians 6:10 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
