Quick answer
Because believers belong to one another, they must put away lying and speak truth. New-self living shows itself first in honest speech.
Overview
Paul now applies the put-off / put-on principle concretely, beginning with truthfulness. Lying is incompatible with the new self and corrosive to the body, 'for we are members of one another.' Honest speech protects and builds up the community Christ has joined together.
