Quick answer

Christ gave these ministers to equip the saints for service, so the whole body of Christ is built up. Leaders train the people; the people do the work of ministry.

Overview

This verse states the purpose of the gifts in verse 11: leaders exist to 'perfect' (equip) God's people for their own works of service. The result is the growth and strengthening of Christ's body, the church. Ministry is thus the calling of every believer, not a clergy class alone, with leaders equipping the saints for that shared work.

Christ at the center

Every spiritual blessing is 'in Christ,' the head over all things for the church, in whom Jew and Gentile are made one new man by his blood.

How Ephesians 4:12 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
