Quick answer

Moses publicly charges Joshua to be strong and courageous, for he will lead Israel into the promised land and cause them to inherit it. It matters because God's purposes continue through appointed leaders beyond any one man's lifetime.

Overview

Before all Israel, Moses commissions Joshua as his successor, transferring leadership in an orderly, public way. The promise rests on God's oath to the fathers, anchoring Joshua's task in the unchanging covenant rather than his own ability. Joshua (whose name means 'Yahweh saves') foreshadows Jesus, the greater Joshua who leads His people into their lasting inheritance.

Christ at the center

Moses promised a Prophet like himself to whom Israel must listen (18:15); Jesus is that Prophet, the one who keeps the covenant we broke and becomes the curse for us by hanging on a tree (Gal 3:13).
