Quick answer
The false prophet must be put to death for preaching rebellion against the God who redeemed Israel, so evil is purged from the community. Apostasy is treated with utmost seriousness.
Overview
Because leading people to other gods is rebellion against the LORD who redeemed Israel from Egypt, the false prophet faced capital judgment under the theocracy. The aim was to remove the evil and protect the covenant community from spiritual ruin. While the civil penalty belonged to that nation, the gravity of leading others into sin remains, and the gospel both warns against false teachers and offers redemption to repentant sinners.
