Quick answer

Israel must worship at the single place the LORD chooses to put his name, seeking him there rather than at scattered shrines. God centralizes worship around his own presence.

Overview

Instead of the many local high places of the Canaanites, Israel is to gather at the one sanctuary God appoints, eventually the temple in Jerusalem. This guards the unity and purity of worship and teaches that access to God is on his terms. The chosen place where God puts his name ultimately points to Christ, in whom God's presence dwells and through whom we now draw near.

Christ at the center

Moses promised a Prophet like himself to whom Israel must listen (18:15); Jesus is that Prophet, the one who keeps the covenant we broke and becomes the curse for us by hanging on a tree (Gal 3:13).

How Deuteronomy 12:5 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
