Overview

This verse strikingly anticipates Paul's later epistles: justification, being declared righteous, comes through faith in Christ, not by the works of the law. The law could expose sin but never free from it; only Jesus can. Here, early in his ministry, Paul proclaims the doctrine of justification by faith that lies at the core of the gospel.
