Quick answer

Paul did not eat anyone's food for free but worked hard night and day so as not to burden the church. He paid his own way as an example of industrious love.

Overview

Rather than living off the Thessalonians, Paul labored "night and day" at his trade to support himself (Acts 18:3). This self-sacrifice removed any excuse for the idle and demonstrated that the gospel is not a pretext for laziness. His diligence flowed from love that refused to be a burden to those he served.
