Quick answer

The men of Jericho tell Elisha their city is pleasant but its water is bad and the land unfruitful. They bring a real need to the prophet.

Overview

Jericho lay under an ancient curse from Joshua's day (Joshua 6:26), and its bad water rendered the land barren. The people turn to the man of God for help, recognizing his standing with Yahweh. Their request opens an occasion for God to display His healing power through Elisha.
