Quick answer
In his distress Ahaz trespasses against the LORD even more. Affliction hardens rather than humbles this faithless king.
Overview
Rather than repenting under God's discipline, Ahaz responds to his troubles with deeper rebellion, the very opposite of how the godly respond to chastening. The Chronicler highlights the tragedy of a heart that grows harder under judgment. This hardening shows the deadly nature of unbelief and underscores the need for the new heart God gives through the gospel of Christ.
