Quick answer

The LORD brings Judah low because Ahaz acted without restraint and trespassed severely against him. The verse names Ahaz's unfaithfulness as the cause of national humiliation.

Overview

The Chronicler explicitly attributes Judah's decline to God's judgment for Ahaz's reckless and grievous sin. Calling Ahaz king of Israel may signal that his conduct identified Judah with the apostate north. This sober verdict reinforces the covenant principle that sin brings ruin, magnifying the grace by which Christ bears the judgment His people deserve.
