Quick answer

The temple had been damaged by Athaliah's sons, who had even diverted its holy things to Baal worship. Past wickedness explained the temple's ruined state.

Overview

The Chronicler explains that Athaliah's wicked household had broken into God's house and dedicated its sacred items to the Baals. This desecration left the temple in disrepair and underscored why restoration was urgent. It reveals the lasting damage of idolatry and the need to reclaim what had been profaned for the Lord's true worship.
