Quick answer
Rejected by the king, the northern tribes renounce their allegiance to the house of David and go home. The united kingdom of Israel is torn apart.
Overview
Echoing Sheba's earlier rebellion (2 Samuel 20:1), the people cry, 'What portion have we in David?' and abandon Davidic rule. The breach that began under Solomon's idolatry now becomes open and lasting division. Yet God's covenant promise to David endures, for the lamp of David would not be wholly extinguished, ultimately shining in Christ, the King of a kingdom that cannot be divided.
