Quick answer

Believers are to test everything and firmly hold on to what proves good and true.

Overview

Rather than accepting or rejecting teaching uncritically, the church is to evaluate all things, measuring them against God's revealed truth (Acts 17:11). What survives testing as genuinely good is to be grasped and retained firmly. This discernment guards the flock and honors Christ, the truth, who warned against deceivers.
