Quick answer

God promised to raise up a faithful priest who would serve His heart and minister before His anointed forever. A better, lasting priesthood is foretold.

Overview

In place of Eli's failed house, God pledges a 'faithful priest' with an enduring house, fulfilled in the line of Zadok and Samuel's faithful ministry. Yet the promise of a priest who perfectly does God's will and serves before God's anointed forever points beyond any man to Christ, our great High Priest. Amid judgment, God holds out hope of a faithful mediator who will never fail.

Christ at the center

The rise of the anointed king after Israel's failed first choice points to the true Anointed One (Messiah means 'anointed'), the shepherd-king after God's own heart from Bethlehem.

How 1 Samuel 2:35 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
