Quick answer

God grants Solomon a wise and understanding heart beyond anyone before or after him. The gift makes Solomon uniquely wise among men.

Overview

The LORD answers Solomon's prayer abundantly, bestowing unmatched wisdom. This singular gift becomes the hallmark of Solomon's reign and a foretaste of the wisdom that fills Israel's later writings. Yet his greater-than-Solomon descendant, Jesus, would surpass even this, for in Him true and perfect wisdom came to dwell among us (Matthew 12:42).

Christ at the center

Solomon's glory, wisdom, and temple where God's presence dwells are a shadow of the greater Son of David — 'one greater than Solomon is here' — and of the true Temple, Christ himself.
