Quick answer

Judah, too, does evil and provokes God to jealousy with sins surpassing their ancestors. The south is not spared the charge of unfaithfulness.

Overview

Though Judah retained the temple and Davidic kings, it fell into serious sin during Rehoboam's reign. 'Provoking to jealousy' recalls covenant language about idolatry as spiritual adultery. The verse shows that proximity to true worship does not guarantee faithfulness, underscoring the universal need for a faithful heart.

Solomon's glory, wisdom, and temple where God's presence dwells are a shadow of the greater Son of David — 'one greater than Solomon is here' — and of the true Temple, Christ himself.
