Shallum was the son of Kore, a descendant of Abiasaph, from the clan of Korah. He and his relatives, the Korahites, were responsible for guarding the entrance to the sanctuary, just as their ancestors had guarded the Tabernacle in the camp of the Lord.

Quick answer
Traces Shallum to Korah and notes the Korahites' ancient role as threshold-keepers. It grounds the gatekeepers in a long heritage of service.
Overview
Shallum descended from Korah, and his clan had long been keepers of the thresholds of the tent, going back to the wilderness sanctuary. Though Korah himself rebelled, his descendants were preserved and given honored service, a striking testimony to God's mercy. The Chronicler shows grace overcoming a family's past, foreshadowing the redemption available to all in Christ.
