The Kingdom of God

God's reign — lost in Eden, promised to David, proclaimed by Jesus, consummated at the end.

From the first command to "have dominion," the Bible is about God's rule exercised through his people — a rule forfeited in Eden, focused in the throne promised to David, glimpsed in Daniel's everlasting kingdom, and then announced by Jesus: "The kingdom of God is at hand." He teaches it in parables, embodies it in his works, and the story ends with the cry, "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ."
  1. 1

    "Have dominion"

    Genesis 1:28

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Humanity is made to rule creation under God — the kingdom's first form.
  2. 2

    A throne established forever

    2 Samuel 7:16

And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.

God promises David a son whose kingdom will have no end.
  3. 3

    An everlasting dominion

    Daniel 7:14

And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

Daniel sees one like a son of man given a kingdom that will never be destroyed.
  4. 4

"The kingdom of God is at hand"

    Mark 1:15

And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Jesus opens his ministry announcing the kingdom has come near.
  5. 5

    The parables of the kingdom

    Matthew 13:31

Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field:

Jesus likens the kingdom to a mustard seed — small now, immense at the end.
  6. 6

The kingdom of the world become Christ's

    Revelation 11:15

And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

Revelation: "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ."
