Quick answer

Joshua and his fellow priests are signs of something greater: God will bring His servant, the Branch. The priesthood points ahead to the Messiah.

Overview

The 'Branch' is a messianic title found in the prophets for the coming righteous King from David's line. Joshua and the priests are living symbols anticipating this servant. Here the vision lifts the eyes from the present priesthood to Christ, God's servant, who unites the offices of priest and king in Himself.

Christ at the center

The Branch who is both priest and king, the shepherd struck and the flock scattered, the king coming humble on a donkey, the one they pierced, the fountain opened for sin — Zechariah is dense with Christ.

How Zechariah 3:8 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
