Quick answer

The angel sends word that Jerusalem will be inhabited like open villages because of its multitude of people and livestock. Growth will burst its old limits.

Overview

The restored Jerusalem will be so populous and prosperous that it cannot be confined within walls. This is a vision of abundant blessing far exceeding the modest post-exilic reality. It foreshadows the expansive, unwalled growth of God's people in the gospel age, gathered from every nation into His city.

Christ at the center

The Branch who is both priest and king, the shepherd struck and the flock scattered, the king coming humble on a donkey, the one they pierced, the fountain opened for sin — Zechariah is dense with Christ.

How Zechariah 2:4 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
