Quick answer

Two-thirds of the land will be cut off and die, but a third will survive. It matters because it sets up the refining and preservation of a faithful remnant through judgment.

Overview

Following the striking of the Shepherd, severe judgment falls, removing two parts of the people while a third is spared. Throughout Scripture God preserves a remnant through such siftings (Isa. 6:13; Rom. 11:5). The surviving 'third' is not spared for its own sake but to be refined and made truly God's people, as the next verse explains.

Christ at the center

The Branch who is both priest and king, the shepherd struck and the flock scattered, the king coming humble on a donkey, the one they pierced, the fountain opened for sin — Zechariah is dense with Christ.

How Zechariah 13:8 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
