Quick answer

On that day Jerusalem becomes a 'burdensome stone'—all who try to lift it are gravely wounded, though all nations gather against it. It matters because God turns His people's apparent vulnerability into the means of the nations' downfall.

Overview

Like a heavy stone that injures anyone who tries to heave it, Jerusalem will wound every nation that attacks her, even as the whole world unites against her. The phrase 'in that day' points to a decisive future deliverance. The verse assures God's people that worldwide hostility cannot prevail against what God defends, a confidence ultimately resting in Christ's victory over all His enemies (Ps. 2).

Christ at the center

The Branch who is both priest and king, the shepherd struck and the flock scattered, the king coming humble on a donkey, the one they pierced, the fountain opened for sin — Zechariah is dense with Christ.

How Zechariah 12:3 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
