Quick answer

Lightning and thunder come from the throne, with seven fiery lamps identified as the seven Spirits of God. God's awesome holiness and the fullness of His Spirit are on display.

Overview

The storm imagery echoes Sinai (Exodus 19), where God's presence was marked by thunder and fire, underscoring His holy majesty and power to judge. The 'seven Spirits' is a symbolic way of speaking of the one Holy Spirit in His sevenfold fullness and perfection. Thus the triune God is present in this scene: the Father enthroned, the Spirit before Him, and (in chapter 5) the Lamb.

Christ at the center

Revelation ends the story with the slain-yet-standing Lamb who is worthy, the Lion of Judah, the Alpha and Omega, the returning King who makes all things new and dwells with his people forever.

How Revelation 4:5 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
