Quick answer

Christ counsels them to buy from him gold, white garments, and eye salve, the true riches they lack. It matters because only Christ can supply real righteousness, salvation, and sight.

Overview

Using the city's known trades in banking, wool, and medicine, Christ offers what they truly need: tested gold (genuine faith and true riches), white garments (righteousness covering their shame), and eye salve (spiritual sight). These come freely from him, the very grace their self-sufficiency despised. The counsel is a gracious gospel invitation to the spiritually bankrupt.

Christ at the center

Revelation ends the story with the slain-yet-standing Lamb who is worthy, the Lion of Judah, the Alpha and Omega, the returning King who makes all things new and dwells with his people forever.

How Revelation 3:18 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
