Quick answer

Those with ears must hear, and to the one who overcomes, Christ promises the tree of life in God's paradise. It matters because perseverance leads to eternal life with God.

Overview

The call to "hear what the Spirit says" applies the message to all the churches, not just Ephesus. The promise of the tree of life reverses the loss of Eden, pointing to restored access to God and eternal life secured in Christ. Each letter ends with such a promise to the one who overcomes by persevering faith.

Christ at the center

Revelation ends the story with the slain-yet-standing Lamb who is worthy, the Lion of Judah, the Alpha and Omega, the returning King who makes all things new and dwells with his people forever.

How Revelation 2:7 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
