Quick answer

The sixth bowl dries up the Euphrates to prepare a way for kings from the east. God orchestrates even the gathering of his enemies.

Overview

The drying of the great river removes a barrier, preparing the way for the 'kings from the sunrise' to advance toward the final conflict. The imagery recalls God's parting of waters in the Exodus and Jordan, now serving his end-time purposes. Even the assembling of hostile kings unfolds under God's sovereign direction.

Christ at the center

Revelation ends the story with the slain-yet-standing Lamb who is worthy, the Lion of Judah, the Alpha and Omega, the returning King who makes all things new and dwells with his people forever.

How Revelation 16:12 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
