Quick answer

Grace and peace also come from Jesus, the faithful witness, risen firstborn, and ruler of earth's kings, who freed us by his blood. It matters because his death and resurrection secure our redemption.

Overview

Jesus is given three titles drawn from Psalm 89: faithful witness, firstborn of the dead, and ruler of kings, affirming his trustworthiness, his resurrection, and his sovereignty. The verse turns to praise, celebrating Christ's love and his cleansing of our sins by his blood. Here the gospel is stated plainly: redemption is accomplished through the atoning death of the risen Lord.

Christ at the center

Revelation ends the story with the slain-yet-standing Lamb who is worthy, the Lion of Judah, the Alpha and Omega, the returning King who makes all things new and dwells with his people forever.

How Revelation 1:5 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
