Quick answer

In his distress the psalmist cried to Yahweh, and God answered him. God hears and responds to the cries of His troubled people.

Overview

This first 'Song of Ascents,' likely sung by pilgrims journeying to Jerusalem, opens with a testimony of answered prayer in distress. The psalmist's experience grounds the whole pilgrimage in confidence that God responds to His people's cries. It anticipates the believer's assurance that God hears prayer offered through Christ.

Christ at the center

The Psalms are Christ's own prayer book and a gallery of his portraits — the suffering one of Psalm 22, the risen Lord of Psalm 16, the priest-king of Psalm 110, the Son to whom the nations are given.

How Psalms 120:1 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
