Quick answer

People may make their plans, but the final word ultimately comes from the Lord. It matters because God remains sovereign even over our intentions and speech.

Overview

This proverb opens a section emphasizing God's sovereignty over human affairs. While we form plans in our hearts, the outcome and even the fitting answer rest with Yahweh. It teaches dependence rather than passivity, affirming that God governs all things (cf. Proverbs 16:9, 33; James 4:13-15).

Christ at the center

Wisdom personified, with God before creation and the agent of all things, anticipates Christ 'in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom' — the wisdom of God made flesh.
