Quick answer

When the tabernacle was raised, God's cloud covered it by day and appeared as fire by night. God visibly dwelt among His people.

Overview

The cloud and fire signaled God's manifest presence over the tabernacle, the meeting place between Him and Israel. This visible glory assured the people that God was truly with them, anticipating the day when God would dwell among us in Christ, the Word made flesh, and ultimately with His people forever.

Christ at the center

In the wilderness Christ is the water from the rock, the bronze serpent lifted up that the dying might look and live (John 3:14), and the star and scepter that Balaam saw rising out of Jacob.
