Quick answer

All the firstborn belong to God because He spared Israel's firstborn at the Passover. His claim on them rests on His act of redemption in Egypt.

Overview

God's right to the firstborn stems from the night He struck Egypt's firstborn but passed over Israel's, sparing them through the blood of the lamb. Those redeemed by that judgment-sparing grace belonged wholly to Him. This Passover backdrop foreshadows Christ our Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7), whose blood claims a redeemed people as God's own possession.

Christ at the center

In the wilderness Christ is the water from the rock, the bronze serpent lifted up that the dying might look and live (John 3:14), and the star and scepter that Balaam saw rising out of Jacob.
