Quick answer

Everything devoted to the LORD in Israel was given to the priests, enlarging their God-given portion.

Overview

Items placed under the ban or wholly devoted to God passed to the priests as their share. This further provision underscored that what belonged to God supported His ministers. It situates the priesthood at the center of Israel's worship, receiving what the people consecrated to the LORD.

Christ at the center

In the wilderness Christ is the water from the rock, the bronze serpent lifted up that the dying might look and live (John 3:14), and the star and scepter that Balaam saw rising out of Jacob.
