Quick answer

Even in their own kingdom and rich land they did not serve God or turn from their evil. It matters because it shows that blessing alone cannot produce a faithful heart.

Overview

Despite enjoying their kingdom and a bountiful land, Israel neither served God nor repented of their wickedness. Outward prosperity left their hearts unchanged. This exposes the need for inward transformation, which God promises in the new covenant and accomplishes through Christ and the Spirit (Ezekiel 36:26-27).
