Quick answer

The merciful are blessed, for they will receive mercy. It teaches that those who show mercy reflect, and will experience, God's mercy.

Overview

Mercy toward others, compassion that forgives and helps, characterizes those who have received God's mercy. Jesus is not teaching that we earn forgiveness by being merciful, but that a forgiven heart forgives. The merciful will themselves obtain the abundant mercy of God on the day of judgment.

Christ at the center

Matthew presents Jesus as the promised King — son of David, son of Abraham — the new Moses and true Israel in whom every prophecy reaches 'that it might be fulfilled.'

How Matthew 5:7 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
