Quick answer

The King says they fed, gave drink to, and welcomed him when in need. Their faith showed itself in mercy toward the needy.

Overview

The King points to concrete acts of compassion as evidence of the righteous's true standing. These deeds are not the cause of their salvation but the fruit of a living faith. Strikingly, Christ identifies himself with the hungry, thirsty, and the stranger. Genuine love for Christ overflows in love toward those in need.

Christ at the center

Matthew presents Jesus as the promised King — son of David, son of Abraham — the new Moses and true Israel in whom every prophecy reaches 'that it might be fulfilled.'

How Matthew 25:35 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
