Quick answer

No one could answer Jesus, and from then on they stopped daring to test him with questions. It shows the futility of opposing Christ with mere human cleverness.

Overview

Having silenced the religious leaders' repeated attempts to trap him, Jesus demonstrates a wisdom and authority none can match. This closes the series of controversies in the temple and sets the stage for his coming denunciations and passion. The leaders' silence is not repentance but hardened defeat, highlighting that knowing the right answers is not the same as bowing to the Lord.

Christ at the center

Matthew presents Jesus as the promised King — son of David, son of Abraham — the new Moses and true Israel in whom every prophecy reaches 'that it might be fulfilled.'

How Matthew 22:46 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
