Quick answer

Peter notes that the disciples have left everything to follow Jesus and asks what they will receive. His question reflects both genuine sacrifice and a lingering concern for reward.

Overview

In contrast to the rich man who clung to his possessions, the disciples have forsaken all to follow Christ. Peter's question, though mingled with self-interest, gives Jesus an occasion to teach about the certain rewards of discipleship. Jesus does not rebuke the desire for reward but reorders it around grace and faithful service.

Christ at the center

Matthew presents Jesus as the promised King — son of David, son of Abraham — the new Moses and true Israel in whom every prophecy reaches 'that it might be fulfilled.'

How Matthew 19:27 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
