Quick answer

Jesus pronounces a blessing on those not offended by Him. He gently warns John, and all, against stumbling over an unexpected Messiah.

Overview

Jesus closes His answer with a beatitude for those who do not 'stumble' over Him. Many expected a conquering deliverer, not a humble healer headed for a cross. The verse calls John, and every reader, to receive Christ as He truly is, finding blessing rather than offense in His lowly, saving way.

Christ at the center

Matthew presents Jesus as the promised King — son of David, son of Abraham — the new Moses and true Israel in whom every prophecy reaches 'that it might be fulfilled.'

How Matthew 11:6 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
