Quick answer

Jesus first sends the twelve only to Israel, not to Gentiles or Samaritans. This reflects God's ordered plan to reach Israel first.

Overview

For this initial mission Jesus restricts the apostles to the people of Israel, in keeping with the gospel coming 'to the Jew first.' This is not permanent exclusion, for the risen Christ will later send them to all nations. The limited scope honors God's covenant order before the worldwide commission unfolds.

Christ at the center

Matthew presents Jesus as the promised King — son of David, son of Abraham — the new Moses and true Israel in whom every prophecy reaches 'that it might be fulfilled.'

How Matthew 10:5 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
