Quick answer

Two robbers are crucified with Jesus, one on each side. He dies numbered among criminals.

Overview

Jesus is executed between two outlaws, placed in the position of greatest shame as though the chief of malefactors. This setting fulfills the prophecy that he would be 'numbered with the transgressors' (Isaiah 53:12). The sinless Savior takes the place of the guilty, bearing the judgment they deserved.

Christ at the center

Mark drives urgently to the cross, showing Jesus the Son of God as the suffering Servant who 'came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.'

How Mark 15:27 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
