Quick answer

Jesus warns the disciples they will be arrested, beaten, and tried before rulers for his sake. Their suffering becomes a testimony to Christ.

Overview

Far from promising ease, Jesus prepares his followers for persecution from religious and civil authorities, exactly as the book of Acts records. Yet even hostile courtrooms become platforms to bear witness to him. Suffering for the gospel is not defeat but opportunity, sharing in Christ's own path and advancing his testimony before the powerful.

Christ at the center

Mark drives urgently to the cross, showing Jesus the Son of God as the suffering Servant who 'came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.'

How Mark 13:9 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
