Quick answer

Generous giving is met with God's overflowing generosity, pictured as grain heaped up beyond the brim. The measure we use toward others is the measure returned to us.

Overview

Using the image of a merchant filling a measure to overflowing, Jesus assures the open-handed of God's abundant response. This is a principle of God's gracious dealings, not a guarantee of material wealth. It reflects the heart of a generous God whose greatest gift is His Son, given without measure.

Christ at the center

Luke shows Jesus the Savior for all — outsiders, the poor, the nations — the one who, on the Emmaus road, opened all the Scriptures to show they were about himself.

How Luke 6:38 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
