Limitless Word
“Or suppose you unknowingly touch something that is ceremonially unclean, such as the carcass of an unclean animal. When you realize what you have done, you must admit your defilement and your guilt. This is true whether it is a wild animal, a domestic animal, or an animal that scurries along the ground.

Quick answer

Touching anything ceremonially unclean, even unknowingly, leaves a person guilty and in need of cleansing. Holiness touches every part of life.

Overview

Contact with an unclean carcass rendered a person ritually defiled, and guilt remained even when the contact was forgotten. These laws trained Israel to feel the pervasiveness of impurity and the need for separation unto God. They prepare us to grasp the deeper uncleanness of sin, which only Christ can cleanse, making the unclean holy (Mark 1:41).

Christ at the center

Every sacrifice, every priest, and every day of atonement points beyond itself to the one perfect offering and the great High Priest who, by his own blood, makes the unclean holy once for all.

How Leviticus 5:2 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
