Quick answer
If a fellow Israelite became poor, the community was to support him and let him live among them. God required active care for the needy.
Overview
God commanded his people to uphold an impoverished brother, treating him as a welcomed resident rather than abandoning him. This compassion bound the covenant community together in mutual responsibility. It anticipates the gospel ethic of caring for the poor and bearing one another's burdens (Galatians 6:2).
